Piscator’s Bible translation of 1643 and a new project of the Church Slavonic Bible translation of the 17th century belongigng to the book coterie of Epiphanius Slavinetsky and Euthimius Chudovsky

The article examines lexical features of the Church Slavonic translation of Latin inscriptions
under the engravings of the Piscator Bible of 1643 in a copy kept in the State
Tretyakov Gallery. The vocabulary of the Piscator Bible is considered in comparison
with the vocabulary of the biblical translations of the Chudovsky book coterie of the second
half of the 17th century, primarily with the New Testament translation of Epiphanius
Slavinetsky and Euthimius Chudovsky. Common features of word usage are revealed:
the presence of lexical Grecisms, as well as the presence of indirect Polish borrowings.
At the same time, in the translation of the Latin inscriptions of the Piscator Bible, there is
significant discrepancy with the Church Slavonic tradition in choosing certain lexical
equivalents (in particular, vepr’ for porcus instead of svinii). We show that both translations
resort to the lexicons and Polish bibles compiled by Epiphanius Slavinetsky. In the
linguistic and cultural aspects the translation of Latin inscriptions under the engravings
of the Piscator Bible can be regarded as one of the preparatory stages for the translation
of the complete Bible, accomplished by the bookmen of the Chudov monastery.
