«As for the rest, madam the Marquise…»: about the semantics of v ostal’nom, v pročem and vpročem

This study focuses on the three Russian items v ostal’nom, v prochem, vpročem in their function as markers of logical-semantic relations between sentences. The argument is that the level on which these markers establish the relation – propositional content, attitude of the speaker, discursive act, text organization – is relevant and should be thoroughly specified. After defining the conditions of use of these three items, the author argues that the relation established by v ostal’nom, v pročem is one of ‘exception’, whereas the relation established by vpročem is one of ‘oppositive addition’.
