Abstract:

The article is focused on semantic analysis of the Russian adverbs sledom, vsled, vdogonku ‘following (smb. or smth.)’ which in their literal meaning denote position behind a moving object. The paper demonstrates that the semantics of the selected adverbs includes indication of a goal. However, these adverbs are usually not included in the class of adverbs that contain a goal component in their semantics. The sense ‘goal’ is fundamental to a natural language, and it can be expected that it is included in the semantics of a wider range of words than it is currently considered. The analysis of the selected words confirms this hypothesis.
