Abstract:

The spelling of toponyms includes controversial issues that still have not received final codification in The Rules of Russian Orthography and Punctuation, with the result that in practice various spellings are used even in official documents and databases. The State Catalogue of Geographic Names, the main Russian database for toponyms, contains same-type onyms with contradictive spelling.
One of the main issues in toponym orthography is the spelling of substantives with postpositional adjectives. The author considers that the rule for such place names is eligible, does not need to be revised, but needs more specification for some occasions. Ordinal words, according to their part-of-speech status, should be considered to belong to numerals, which entails their separate spelling with substantive place names in postposition.
