Copular verb slyt’: the history of modalization

Abstract:

The article presents a complex (grammatical, lexical, semantic, pragmatic) analysis of the verbal copula slyt’, from the Old Russian period to the present. The present study describes mechanisms of semantic-grammatical transformation of the syncretic copular verb slyt’ from the nominative meaning (‘to be called’) to the modern modal meaning (‘to be considered’).
