Vr’ev and ur’ev (etymology, semantics, geographic distribution)

The article presents a detailed analysis of place names and dialectal geographical terms with the stems врев-/врёв- and урев-. These lexemes, which are characteristic of the Pskov-Novgorod area, are derived from the verb vrěti 'boil, seethe'. The author demonstrates the etymological identity of the toponyms Врев, Врево, Врёво and the terms Урев, Урево and reconstructs the sources of the phonetic differences between them. The specific characteristics of their derivation, territorial distribution, and semantic evolution are also discussed.
