Once more on the prefixless iterative -yva-/-iva-verbs like хаживать in the history of Russian

2012. № 1 (23), 140-178

Abstract:

The article deals with the history of the Russian prefixless iterative verbs like хаживать, стаивать, etc. in the different dialect areas. The semantic specificity of these verbs is conditioned by the fact that they are derived from imperfective verbal stems by imperfective suffixes. As the Russian chronicles of the 15th – 16th centuries show, the usage of the iterative verbs was similar to their usage in the modern North Russian dialects, but later in the central dialects and in Moscow their meaning became more specialized as ‘a long time ago’ or especially ‘never’ in negative contexts. In the southwestern (Ukrainian) dialects the iterative verbs also were in use in the 15th-17th centuries, but were lost later.
